Dental Board licensees who have licenses set to expire during the period of emergency (March 27, 2020 – April 1, 2021) now have until July 1, 2021 to renew their license. This bill does not, however, change any continuing education requirements for Board licensees. The Ohio Board Of Cosmetology is in charge of enforcing laws and regulations through inspections, investigation into complaints submitted by consumers and conducts hearings, imposes penalties and enforces actions when they deem necessary. Through education and the enforcement of the cosmetology laws in OH, the state board ensures the safety, welfare and public health by regulating the salons, schools and individuals who practice cosmetology. Ohio Cosmetology License Lookup

If you are planning to setup an appointment with a local salon, it is recommended that you first verify the professional or business license. You can do that online for the state of Ohio by visiting elicense.ohio.gov. From there you can search for the person or business and see if there are any disciplinary actions on record. This will allow you to make an informed decision about the person and or business providing your service.

Filing a Complaint

Part of the duties of the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board is receiving and investigating consumer complaints involving unlawful acts which may include:

• Deceptive statements
• Sanitation regulations

• Malpractice or incompetence

Here are some tips on preparing your complaint. Make a list of things you want to say. Try your best to separate your feelings from the facts. Present the events in the order of which they happened, use dates and times if possible. When submitting your complaint, please make sure to provide copies of documents, for example contracts, letters, advertisements, sakes slips, cancelled checks, warranties and any other documentation that can support your claim. Only provide copies, keep the original copies for your own record. Please remember, the complaint should describe the event or practice which misled you. If you can, please also state why the practice was misleading.

Ohio Cosmetology license renewal completely changed for 2018

Everything’s changed with Ohio cosmetology license renewal and manicurist license renewal for the 2017-2018 period. The State of Ohio did away with some requirements, added others, and switched everyone’s license types around. A LOT changed, but don’t worry, we got you covered.

About This Guide

We cover everything you need to know (and leave out what you don’t!) in our unofficial but totally definitive guide to renewing your Ohio cosmetology or manicurist license.

Hey, disclaimertime, we’re not the State Board!

This guide is written by cosmetologists for cosmetologists. And we didn’t just rewrite the same info that’s on the Ohio State Board’s website (but definitely go there for all of the official documentation). We went through the process ourselves to identify all of the “gotchas” so your experience is as quick and easy as possible.

So What Changed?

Everything! Here’s a quick rundown:

• All existing Manager licenses were converted to Advanced Cosmetologist licenses. So, if you used to be COSM, you’re now COSA. Same with manicurists, if you used to be MANM, you’re MANA now.
• The requirement for a Human Trafficking course was dropped.
• There’s a new requirement to take a one-hour course on Ohio Rules and Regulations that is only offered by the Ohio State Board.
• The State’s elicense system was overhauled, so everyone must re-register.
• CEUs must be completed a bit earlier this year.

So When’s The Deadline?

Where Do I Start?

First, check to see if your license is in “Active” or “Inactive” status by looking yourself up at Ohio’s elicense website.

Take the following steps to check you license status:

1. Go to the Verify page on the State’s eLicense website.
2. Enter as much information as you can.
3. Click Search.

NOTE: Having trouble looking up your license? Some licenses are still in the system as “management licenses” with the COSM and MANM prefixes. Go figure, right?

1. Scroll down and you should see either “Active” or “Inactive” for the license status:

Inactive Licenses

While your status is in “Inactive” status, you may not practice and you do not need to complete your continuing education requirements. HOWEVER, you must complete your CE in order to move your license back to “Active” status.

According to the State Board’s website you need to reach out to them to start the process of putting your license back in “Active status.

But heads up, we did see this from the State Board when we logged into the eLicense site:

When returning an INACTIVE/ESCROW license to an ACTIVE status, up to 24 hours of continuing education may be required based on the number of renewal periods the license has been classified as INACTIVE/ESCROW. When completing the number of continuing education hours to restore an INACTIVE license, the current CE hours requirement must be included in those hours.
1 – Renewal Period = 8 Hours
2 – Renewal Periods = 16 Hours
3 – Or More Renewal Periods = 24 Hours

Active Licenses

OK so you made sure that your license is active, good stuff. Next step is to earn your continuing education credits for your Ohio cosmetology license renewal.

Complete the Ohio Continuing Education Requirement

If you’re a cosmetologist then you need:

• 1 hour of Board laws and rules CE (Only provided by the Board)
• 2 hours of Safety and Sanitation CE
• 5 hours cosmetology specific CE

If you’re a manicurist then you need:

• 1 hour of Board laws and rules CE (Only provided by the Board)
• 2 hours of Safety and Sanitation CE
• 5 hours manicurist specific CE

Take the Laws and Rules Course

You must take a one-hour course on Ohio laws and rules that is offered exclusively by the Ohio State Board. This is in addition to the sanitation and practice-specific CE you already completed.

Take the following steps to complete the laws and rules course:

1. Go to cebroker.com and search for “rules” or click here to go directly to the course on Table Mesa’s site.
2. Click TAKE COURSE to start the registration process.

1. Enter your email and click REGISTER to continue with the registration process.
2. Watch the video and complete the quiz.
3. Once you pass the quiz, you’ll be asked to input your license information including issue date and expiration date. You can get this info from the State’s eLicense site here (the same site you used earlier to confirm your license status). Remember there are still a handful of licenses in the system using the “COSM” and/or the “MANM” prefixes.

State Of Ohio Cosmetology License

Register a New Elicense Account

Ohio’s eLicense system was overhauled so everyone needs to register for a new account. The State emailed everyone a registration code around August, 2018, so go digging through your email. You’ll need that code to complete your Ohio cosmetology license renewal. !If you can’t find it, it’s not the end of the world – see below.

If you’ve already registered, then skip this section

Take the following steps to register an eLicense account:

1. Go to https://elicense.ohio.gov/OH_CommunitiesLogin
2. Click the I HAVE A LICENSE button.
3. Fill out the fields and input the registration code that the State emailed you.

NOTE: Can’t find the email with the registration code? Click the OBTAIN SECURITY CODE button.

1. Click SUBMIT to complete your registration. You should be taken to a page listing your license(s).

Renew Your License

OK now you can actually renew your license. You’re going to do that on the eLicense site you just registered for.

Pa Cosmetology License Renewal

Take the following steps to complete you license renewal:

1. Sign in to the elicense site here.
2. Click on Dashboard to view your licenses.
3. Click the OPTIONS drop-down and select Renew to start the renewal process.

1. View the renewal information that is presented and click PROCEED TO APPLICATION.
2. Continue to verify your information, answer some questions, and then pay the State’s renewal fee.

NOTE: You must renew EACH license so if you have multiple practice licenses, an independent contractor license, an instructor license, etc you must renew each one.
